DBL El Final Maduro

This cigar has a sharp box-press and an evenly colored dark, chocolate brown wrapper. The cigar feels very light in the hand and soft to the touch. There are some noticeable creases/wrinkles on the wrapper of both samples. The box-press looks so sharp and elegant it makes the wrinkles really stand out. It reminds me of someone in a nice tailored suit that forgot to iron their shirt. This was a tale of two different cigars. The first cigar sample had muted flavors, construction issues and a smoke texture that left a lot to be desired. The second cigar sample was rich in flavor, lively in its transitions, and nearly perfect in construction. The first cigar was forgettable, the second cigar was memorable. If the second sample is the true intention of the manufacturer, which I believe to be true, this cigar is worth a visit.

On the palate I get a smokey mesquite wood, hickory wood, honey, fig, black pepper, and mixed spices. The spices coat my entire palate. On the retrohale I get earth, some generic woods, and honey on the finish. Towards the end of the first third, the retrohale shifts to include cocoa and leather.

In the second third I get many of the same flavor notes on the palate, with the addition of onion, garlic and paprika. The smokey campfire aroma takes a breather and isn't as dominant here as it was in the first third. On the retrohale I get sweet bread, roasted coffee, cocoa, leather, and earth. On one sample I get some BBQ sweetness, caramel, and cinnamon.

On the palate I get cocoa, leather, earth, mesquite wood, oak wood, red pepper and brown sugar. On the retrohale I get some cocoa, cinnamon, saltiness, and a flavor note that reminds me of Sazón Goya seasoning. The smokey flavor note sits in the background, like a chaperone watching the other aromas play together for a bit.
