Cigar Culture: The Good and the Bad
I’m no expert in the cigar industry, nor do I claim to be, but I can share my experiences as an average consumer in this world. These are my thoughts—both the good and the bad—on the cigar culture. Let’s start with the negatives so we can finish on a high note!
The Bad:
Overwhelming Environments & Judgmental Attitudes:
If you’re new to cigars, walking into a cigar lounge can feel overwhelming, especially if the staff or regulars look down on you for asking basic questions. Some might even laugh at you for choosing a well-known brand instead of a boutique one. And then there are the egos—people who make condescending comments about your knowledge of cigars.
Fortunately, I believe this kind of behavior is becoming less common, but it’s still something to watch out for. Instead of pushing newcomers away, these individuals should be teaching and bringing them into the fold. On top of that, I’ve had a tobacconist follow me around the humidor like I was going to steal something, rather than helping me find a cigar that suits my palate. This may have just been a personality clash, and maybe a one-off experience, but it’s still worth mentioning.
Brand Loyalty and Industry Drama:
Once you’ve navigated through the basics of cigar smoking and figured out your preferences, you’ll likely encounter a phenomenon called “brand loyalty.” You know the type—those who swear by one brand and reject all others, saying things like, “I only smoke Cubans” or ” X Brand is the best.” These individuals often get caught up in industry drama, which can create unnecessary tension. If you’re lucky, you haven’t witnessed it, and I’d recommend staying out of it.
There’s no need to get involved in fights over which brand is superior. These “industry beefs” don’t contribute to the camaraderie of the cigar community and can even damage relationships before they have a chance to form. My advice? Try different cigars from various brands and enjoy them with friends. Don’t let brand drama cloud your judgment. That said, there are some brands I tend to avoid—not because of any beef—but because of personal bad experiences with issues like poor construction or overpriced hype.
The Rise of Questionable Cigar Brands
The cigar industry is booming, with new brands seemingly popping up every other day. While some of these startups are passion projects from genuine enthusiasts eager to bring quality cigars to market at a fair price, others have far less noble intentions.
Unfortunately, not all that glitters is gold in the cigar world. Some brands are created with one goal: to cash in on unsuspecting consumers by marketing subpar cigars as premium products. These opportunists’ prey on the everyday smoker, presenting slick branding and lofty promises while delivering low-quality sticks disguised as high-end offerings. They’re no better than street vendors in tourist traps selling fake Cuban cigars to gullible travelers.
For cigar lovers eager to explore new offerings, the lesson is clear: proceed with caution. Not every “boutique” brand is built on quality or integrity. Do your homework, seek trusted reviews, and rely on reputable sources to avoid falling victim to these scams while hunting for the next great smoke.
The Good:
While I could go into more detail about the challenges of cigar culture, I want to keep things concise and focus on the positives.
Welcoming Shops and Helpful Communities:
Have you ever stepped into a cigar shop that made you feel right at home? I’ve had the pleasure of visiting places where the staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and more than willing to help guide you in selecting a cigar that suits your taste. They’ll help you explore flavors that are not too strong, gently introducing you to the world of cigars. If you’re unsure how to cut or light a cigar, they’ll take the time to show you without making you feel like you’re asking a dumb question.
But it’s not just in person—YouTube is also an amazing resource for beginners and seasoned smokers alike. You can learn the basics like cutting, lighting, and smoking techniques, but also dive into more advanced skills like the retrohale, which allows you to unlock the full flavor profile of a cigar. You can even go further by learning how to build your own cigar lounge at home or grow and roll your own tobacco. There’s so much more to the world of cigars than simply picking one up and smoking it—though there’s absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying it on that level!
The Heart of the Cigar Community:
One of the most beautiful aspects of the cigar culture is the sense of community it fosters. Whether you’re sharing a cigar with a family member, a friend, or even a stranger at a lounge, you’re creating bonds that can last a lifetime. If you live in a state where cigar lounges are banned due to the Clean Air Act, there are still plenty of online communities, like those on Discord or Zoom, where you can connect with other cigar lovers. These virtual spaces can be a source of support—whether you’re going through a tough time and need someone to talk to, or you just want to share some laughs with like-minded people.
If you have access to a cigar lounge, you’ll find a diverse group of people with all sorts of personalities, but sooner or later, you’ll meet someone you click with. You can even bring your friends to a lounge to enjoy cigars together and make new connections. These spaces become sacred—time away from life’s responsibilities, a place to relax and network. Who knows who you’ll meet? Just remember to keep an open mind, be kind, and, most importantly, don’t be a jerk!
A Gateway to Connection and Creativity
Smoking a cigar in the company of others is more than just a pastime—it’s an invitation to pause, connect, and recharge. It provides a peaceful escape from the chaos of daily life, offering a unique blend of mindfulness and relaxation. The thoughtful ritual of lighting, savoring, and enjoying a cigar nurtures a calm, reflective state, often sparking creativity and moments of profound clarity.
In these shared moments, ideas flourish. Some of my best thoughts emerge as I enjoy the quiet contemplation a cigar provides, the rhythmic pace acting as a substance for creativity. Nicotine, a natural component of cigars, has been associated with improved memory and mental focus, enhancing the ability to remain present and centered.
But the true magic lies in the community aspect. Smoking a cigar in good company transforms the experience into a meaningful connection, blending relaxation, conversation, and inspiration. It’s not just about the smoke; it’s about enriching life with moments that ground us, unite us, and remind us to savor the journey together.
