Announced in January, United Cigars is already preparing to ship the next evolution of their storied United Cigars Line. Closing in on what will soon be a legacy spanning 125 years and counting, the historically box-pressed United Natural and United Maduro will now be offered exclusively in round/parejo formats. Started in 1901 as a family of cigar shops, United has stood the test of time.
To accommodate being squeezed into a rectangle, less tobacco is often used to roll a cigar that is going to be box-pressed. What this means for the round version of any blend born with corners is that the blender has a little room to work with. While it is not uncommon for such blends to be balanced out using more of the existing tobaccos, it also presents an opportunity to enhance the experience. Seizing on new the real estate afforded by the shape change, United has made some special upgrades to their flagship blend.
Crafted at Tabacalera Magia in the Dominican Republic, the original formula has been enhanced with Dominican Broadleaf and tobaccos from the Quisqueya region of the Dominican Republic. In the Taíno language, Quisqueya translates to “mother of all lands.” Oliver Nivaud, Director of Operations, says “this was a spiritual re-discovery of how beautiful Dominican tobacco can be,” and shares that “every bale we opened offered a new life to the blend.”
Featuring Dominican binders, both expressions contain Dominican Broadleaf, Quisqueya, Dominican Seco, and Dominican Olor filler tobaccos. The United Natural is wrapped in Ecuadorian Habano, with the United Maduro showcasing a wrapper of Mexican San Andres. Ranging from $8.00 to $9.00 depending on which format you’re trying – Robusto, Toro, and Churchill- full 20 count boxes will available at launch. Expect to see these at your favorite retailers within the next few weeks.
