Second Sight Spirits Spiced Rum: A Unique Take on a Classic
What happens when you put a bunch of circus workers in a distillery in northern Kentucky—and somehow throw in a Swami? You get Second Sight Spirits. I wouldn’t have guessed that either, but here we are, trying out their spiced rum!
Who is Second Sight Spirits?
Second Sight Spirits is a Ludlow, Kentucky-based distillery offering a wide range of spirits, from bourbon and moonshine to a unique hazelnut liqueur. Since they’re a hometown favorite, I’ve made an effort to try almost everything they produce. Right now, I’m working my way through their spiced rum, and I have to say—this one is different.
What Makes This Rum Stand Out?
This rum is aged in French oak barrels and infused with a unique blend of:
- Cherry & citrus peels
- Various spices
- Smoked green tea leaves
- And, of course, some good Kentucky distilling magic
I’m usually not a huge fan of spiced rums because they tend to be overly sweet. But this one? It’s the exception in my book.
Tasting Notes
Nose:
- Tropical fruit
- Heavy mango aroma
- A touch of oak and cherry
Taste:
- Vanilla & molasses up front
- Subtle cherry and oak in the background
Finish:
- A small alcohol kick on the initial finish
- Notes of spices, cherry, and heavy vanilla as it develops
Pairing & Rating
Since spiced rums aren’t typically my thing due to the added flavors, I was skeptical. But this one does real rum justice. I paired it with a Villiger 1888 Nicaragua, and the match was perfect—the rum enhanced the oak and spice notes in the cigar beautifully.
Final Rating: 8.3/10
Why?
- Lost points for being a spiced rum—just like I don’t consider infused bourbons to be true bourbons, I don’t consider spiced rums to be true rums.
- The initial alcohol heat on the finish threw me off, though it balanced out over time.
Final Thoughts
Despite my usual reservations about spiced rums, this one is a keeper. Whether you prefer your rum on the rocks, straight, or in a cocktail, Second Sight’s spiced rum delivers great flavor and a unique experience.
I’ll always keep a bottle of this on hand, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking to explore rum without diving straight into the deep end.
