1`Old Maysville Club Whiskey Review
What’s one club you wish you could join? While the answer may vary, the one club you absolutely need to consider is the Old Maysville Club!
Crafted by one of Kentucky’s oldest and most underrated distilleries, Old Pogue, the Old Maysville Club is a 100% malted rye, bottled-in-bond whiskey that has captured my attention for all the right reasons. Let’s dive into what makes this whiskey a standout.
The Basics
- Mash Bill: 100% malted rye
- Age: 4 years under government supervision
- Proof: 100 proof (Bottled in Bond)
- Cost: $65 plus tax (available at the distillery)
As a bottled-in-bond whiskey, it meets strict regulations: 100-proof standard, no additives other than water, crafted by a single distiller at one distillery, and aged in a government-supervised rickhouse.
Tasting Notes
Aroma:
The nose is a mix of spice and sweetness, with prominent notes of:
- Fresh vanilla beans
- Ground cinnamon
- Toasted oak
- Fresh-cut grass
- A hint of ethanol
While the aroma is mostly pleasant, the ethanol can be overpowering, causing a slight burn on the nose. Still, the combination of spice and sweetness is delightful—almost candle-worthy.
Taste:
The first sip takes me back to making banana bread in the kitchen with my wife. The initial flavors include:
- Chocolate
- Banana
- A hint of cinnamon
As the flavors develop, you’ll notice the classic rye whiskey profile emerge, with notes of:
- Oak
- Baking spice
- A subtle hint of dried cherry
Finish:
The finish is where this whiskey falters. It’s sharp, long, and intense—what I can only describe as “ouch.” The heat and alcohol are overwhelming, from the moment it hits your throat to your chest. However, there are lingering hints of:
- Baking spice
- Caramel
- Malt
Final Score: 3.5/5
