Rum over Bourbon?

Why Rum Deserves a Spot with Your Cigars

From Cuba to England and back to the USA, rum has been a cherished drink throughout history. With origins spanning the Caribbean—Cuba, Barbados, Puerto Rico, and beyond—rum has become a symbol of culture and tradition. Yet, when it comes to pairing with cigars, rum often takes a back seat to bourbon. I’m here to change that! Here’s why we should revive the classic pairing of rum and cigars, and maybe give bourbon a little break.

As Winston Churchill famously said, “Without tradition, art is a flock of sheep without a shepherd.” In Cuban tradition, rum and cigars are inseparable, a pairing as natural as meat and potatoes. It’s said that “rum and cigars are the Cuban version of meat and potatoes,” and who are we to argue with that legacy? Embracing this tradition not only connects us to the roots of cigar culture but also enhances the overall experience.

Just like bourbon, rum offers incredible variety. Whether you prefer spiced, ported, navy proof, white, or black rum, there’s something for everyone. For simplicity, let’s focus on the five main types of rum:

  • White
  • Gold
  • Dark
  • Spiced
  • Flavored

Each type opens a new world of flavor, like stepping into Willy Wonka’s factory—except this time it’s sugarcane and tobacco creating the magic. The variety ensures there’s a rum to match every cigar and every palate.

Let’s talk about money. I’m a working-class person in customer service and hospitality, and the current bourbon market is out of reach for many of us. That’s where rum comes in! Sure, there are expensive rums, just as there are budget-friendly bourbons. But here’s a challenge:

Take $100 (or even $50) to your local liquor store and compare what you can buy in rum versus bourbon. I guarantee rum will give you more bang for your buck!

No disrespect to bourbon—it’s a fantastic drink, and I’m a Kentuckian who holds Elijah Craig in high esteem. But stepping out of your comfort zone and exploring rum could be a game-changer. Who knows, you might find yourself asking, “Why’s the rum gone?” like our favorite Captain.

I hope this article inspires you to try something new. Let me know if you agree—or if you’re still loyal to bourbon! One of the best things about cigars is that it’s an art form, and everyone can enjoy it in their own way.

(Rum is still better, though!)

And remember: the answer is always To Cigar.

Hello, my name is Logan Huddleston. I own and operate To Cigar, which provides cigar and alcohol content on all major social media platforms.  My goal is to connect with and engage other GenZers to help them fall in love with cigars and cigar culture. I do reviews, memes, recipes, pairings, pretty much anything that connects with my audience. Most nights, I can be found with a cigar in one hand and a good drink in the other. Life brings us many questions, but I’m fond of saying, the answer is always To Cigar!
