Suds & Smoke: Orange Creamsicle Sour by Smuttynose Brewing Co

BEER REVIEW

We are back at it with another installment of Suds & Smoke. On tap today is the limited edition Orange Creamsicle Sour made by Smuttynose Brewing Co located in Hampton, New Hampshire. I’ll admit I’m not a huge fan of the newer sours on the market, typically they’re too sweet and don’t ever resemble a beer. However, this one really reminds me of some of the first sours I enjoyed years ago; Beer-forward, crisp and the right amount of sourness. I was also skeptical of this one because I noticed the ingredients contain lactose and when that’s not done properly the results can be frightening. Turns out this is easily the best sour I’ve ever had. Not overly sweet and even more importantly tastes exactly as advertised. The orange flavor is very natural and the creamsicle side of it is executed perfectly. It’s quite simply a sour ale that really captures the essence of an orange creamsicle beautifully.

Cigar Pairing Recommendation: Southern Draw Desert Rose

When pondering what would pair well with this unique beer, I immediately gravitated towards something CT Shade and as creamy as possible. I landed on the Desert Rose. The notes of cream, citrus and floral joined forces with the Sour ale and created magic. The Desert Rose is also an extremely flavorful CT Shade and leans more to medium than mild, so it stood up strong with the beer and actually made the flavors in the beer really pop. This is a pairing I look forward to revisiting regularly.
