Suds & Smoke: Miss V’s Blueberry Ale

Beer Review

Welcome back to Suds & Smoke! This segment is going to cover a beer from MOAT Mountain Brewing Company located in North Conway & Intervale New Hampshire: Miss V’s Blueberry Ale, which comes in at 4.9% and claims to use 90 pounds of Wild Maine blueberries in every brew. This ale checks a ton of boxes when it comes to a fruited ale and the most important one for me is the completely natural flavor. It is not at all overly sweet and fans of fruit beers, as well as skeptics can come together to enjoy this one. It has a very short finish and drinks a lot like a light beer. The blueberry taste is fresh and crisp, yet not at all over powering. A hot summer day and a cold pint of this go together like PB & J. Poured in a tulip style glass, the color has a pinkish orange hue with a thin white head. On the nose is a potent blueberry and wheat, much more powerful than the actual taste on the palate. The short finish is something I really appreciate. I’m not a fan of flavors lingering too long especially when trying to enjoy a cigar simultaneously. This ale is the definition of drinkable, not too heavy and not too light.

Cigar Pairing Recommendation: CAO Flathead 554

Anything broadleaf will go beautifully with this one, but I especially enjoyed the CAO Flathead pairing. The dark fruit notes from the cigar played very well with the Blueberry note in the beer. I noticed the cigar actually elevated the flavor in the beer, making the blueberry really pop. The spice I get from the Flathead leans towards the cinnamon side and that gave the ale a more dessert feel; Think Blueberry crumble cake with a sprinkle of cinnamon.
