Chocolate brown wrapper with a slightly oily, slightly matte tooth. Nice dense roll. One of my samples had a slight curve and taper at the foot. The other was nice and uniform.
Ernesto Perez-Carrillo was already making his way in the world as a Jazz musician when the entire trajectory of his life would change. His Father, who had rebuilt a life for them all after moving to Miami from Cuba, fell ill. Perez-Carrillo left his life as a professional musician and set about learning everything he could about his father’s craft to keep the El Credito factory open rather than see it sold. The La Gloria Cubana Wavell is a huge part of the DNA of craft cigars. In 1999, nearly 20 years after Ernesto left New York and the future he had planned there to join his father in Miami, the Perez-Carrillo family passed ownership on to what is now Scandinavian Tobacco Group and General Cigar Company.
Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf / Binder: Nicaraguan / Filler: Nicaraguan
Vitola: No. 54 / Size: 6 x 54
Factory: STG Esteli / Country of Origin: Nicaragua
Bitter leaf, motor oil
Sweet & savory like cinnamon swirl bread
Green, hay, alfalfa, tea
Right off the bat there is only a mild cinnamon spice bite. Light grey/white ash. No flavor notes really jump out in the first third. Seeking them out I found a basic oak char with some earthiness/grain.
Becomes more bitter with a brief powdered sugar finish that balances things out. End of third becomes more tart, like smoked sour grapes.
Gives way to boiled peanut notes. A slight bitterness remains on the palate that finishes roasty. Ends up a more generic but pleasant smoke.
